Witteberg Private Nature Reserve encompasses 4365 hectares of mountainous terrain, being a transition zone from the Little Karoo to the Great Karoo. We border on the provincial Anysberg Nature Reserve on the southeast for about 4 km.
We have magical mountain scenery, early Stone Age artefacts, cultural historic structures and ruins, interesting geological formations, wildlife, birdlife, lichens, marine trace fossils, three Matjiesfontein fynbos vegetation types, clear night skies and great silence. These create a unique sense of place and sense of historic mystery, ensuring that there is something to interest all nature lovers.
Accommodation
The following self-catering units are available:
One 2-sleeper apartment (one-roomed open-plan)
One 4-sleeper apartment (2 bedrooms)
One 5-sleeper apartment (2 bedrooms with a sleeper couch in the living room).
Our self-catering units are fully furnished and equipped for self-catering purposes and include bed-linen and bath towels. There is cutlery, crockery and most of the kitchen utensils you’d require. Mobile braai units are available. Our water meets SABS standards for household use and human consumption. Just bring along your foodstuffs and drinks – there is no shop in the reserve nor are any catering services offered.
4x4 Trails
Witteberg Private Nature Reserve has five well-marked 4x4 trails; some are only for 4x4s with low range and some can be undertaken with 4x2s with diff-lock. The shortest takes from 30 to 45 minutes and the longest up to two hours, depending of course, on how much sightseeing is done en route.
Mammals
Our mammal list boasts one of the “big five”, namely leopard. Their spoor and droppings are often found, but the leopards themselves are seldom seen.
A variety of macro- and micro-habitats make the reserve suitable for many different mammal species. However, the population densities of the larger game species that can be sustained in these arid habitats are low compared to the northern Savannah zone of Southern Africa.
Among the species found on the reserve are steenbok, klipspringer, grey rhebuck, Namaqua rock mouse, porcupines, aardwolf, Cape hare and scrub hare, dassie (rock hyrax), African wild cat, caracal, bat-eared fox and spectacled dormouse.
Other Interests
Witteberg Private Nature Reserve is primarily a fynbos biome reserve, containing fynbos and renosterveld types. It also is home to a wide variety of bird species, insects, reptiles and amphibians. The reserve also has considerable unexplored archaeological potential and an interesting geology and fossil record.
